Opportunities at USU

Fellowships

I am currently accepting applications for PhD positions and postdoc at Utah State University (USU) in the field of gravitational physics and black hole physics. Additionally, I encourage applications for USU Presidential Scholarships, NSF & NASA fellowships that align with our research focus. These opportunities provide funding for exceptional students interested in advancing the intersection of theoretical physics, gravitational physics, and artificial intelligence-driven methods.

Other PhD/Postdoc Funding Sources

I am open to supervising PhD projects in black hole physics, gravitational waves, and computational methods in fundamental physics, provided appropriate funding sources can be secured. This may include university scholarships, external fellowships (such as NSF GRFP, EU Marie Curie, etc ), or industry funding. If you are interested in pursuing a PhD in this field and have potential funding avenues, please send me a research proposal outlining your topic of interest (see application instructions below).

How to Apply

To apply, please email me with the following materials attached:

  • CV (including education, research experience, and relevant skills).

  • Brief motivation letter (200 – 400 words) explaining how your experience and interests align with the research theme.

  • Research proposal (1 page, only if you are not applying for a predefined project). Proposals should demonstrate a solid understanding of quantum gravity and black hole physics. I encourage applicants to review our recent research to ensure alignment.

  • Additional supporting materials (optional but recommended, such as publications, coding projects, or recommendation letters).

Applications that do not adhere to these instructions or appear overly generic may not be considered. Please allow up to two weeks for review.

After You Apply

Candidates who pass the initial screening will be invited for a 1:1 interview, where we will discuss research interests, background, and potential project directions. Additionally, applicants may be asked to complete a short coding or problem-solving task related to physics-informed neural networks or black hole simulations (no prior preparation required).

If mutual interest is established, successful candidates will be encouraged to formally apply for USU’s PhD program and relevant fellowships (e.g., NSF, USU Presidential Scholarships). The formal application process includes:

  • A detailed research proposal

  • Two academic referees

  • Departmental and/or fellowship interviews

For further details on the PhD application process at USU, please refer to the university’s graduate program guidelines.

Master’s Projects

I am also open to supervising home and visiting Master’s students whose research aligns with our group’s focus. If you are interested, please send your CV and a short description of your relevant experience and research interests.
